The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated...
Yeah, I'm still alive. It's been an eventful summer, and I've seen some good movies, but just haven't had the time or inclination to update the old blog.
Andrew Sullivan took the month of August off (in true European fashion)... Michelle from A Small Victory is on hiatus for the forseeable future--even giving up her chance to report from the Republican National Convention--and most odd, Steven den Betse of USS Clueless is apparently sick of the whole mess and enjoying the time away from his in-depth musings. A few other blogs I read have decided to quietly retire.
For my own part, I always said I'd stop this thing if it was no longer fun. I took a break a while back for a number of reasons, but mainly I just needed a little time away from it. It's sort of like taking on another pet. I've got two dogs, and I couldn't fathom taking on a cat. The blog was kind of like a tamagotchi, in that I felt the need to contribute to it once a day, and the movie reviews became a bit of an obsession. I felt guilty if I watched a movie and didn't write about it.
But part of me has missed it... And things are bound to become interesting in the next few months. Russia has had two major terrorist attacks in the past week: two planes downed by suicide bombers, and a car bombing in Moscow. Chechnya is the main culprit, but there are also rumblings of war with Georgia over Ossetia. The Republican Convention has been interesting and places and largely devoid of violence or disaster, but the next two months are going to be nasty. The prevalence of moderate, fiscal conservative/socially libertarian Republicans at the convention has been heartening, but I don't know how much it has to do with the actual policy wishes of those who pull the strings.
I'm headed off to bed... But perhaps tomorrow, I will rise to blog again.
